This project would be one of three lessons in (specifically) a 3rd grade Music Technology Unit. The lesson/unit can be modified to fit younger and older classes, but this particular lesson was written with 3rd graders in mind! This lesson explores online beat notation softwares that are accessible, free, and easy to use. The teacher will facilitate discussions and activities around student-created beats, and teach the students that music can be made in many different ways- even on the internet! Below is a detailed lesson plan for the Notation Software Exploration!

Due to the Covid-19 closings, I was unfortunately unable to physically teach this lesson, but nevertheless, I have planned a Classical composer/Concert Etiquette unit for a Second Grade music class! The first lesson is all about Beethoven. The class will take a "pre-test" that is identical to the one at the end of the unit, and will learn about Beethoven's life by reading the book "Beethoven Lives Upstairs", and discussing/actively listening to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. The second lesson introduces Igor Stravinsky. We learn that Stravinsky wrote lots of music for ballets, and Students will listen to the beginning of "Firebird" and "The Rite of Spring". When listening to "Firebird", the class will discuss what this music "feels" like, and how it's hard to be a graceful, stereotypical "ballerina" with this music, even though it's for a ballet. Warm-colored scarves will be used by the students to represent the "color" of this piece, and students will physically move according to how the music makes them feel. The second piece they will listen to is "The Rite Of Spring", they will learn that this is also different from a normal ballet. We will discuss the riots at the first performance, and why that is not a respectful way to act at a concert/performance. This will segue into the next lesson about Concert Etiquette and the respectful way to attend a performance! This lesson teaches students about Concert Etiquette, including sitting respectfully, things to think about while actively listening, Ticket and Program procedures, Intermissions, Respectful applause, and even some critical listening! During this class, the students will be presented with pre-made programs and tickets. Their "tickets" double as "exit tickets", in which they will fill out before the end of class, so that the teacher can measure their growth and learning during the activity. Included in the documents are: 1. A step-by-step plan for the entire class period 2. Objectives 3. Standards 4. Materials 5. Photos of the pre-made tickets and programs (for first and last lessons) I am so excited to one day teach this lesson to students of my own, but for the time being, I've had a lot of fun planning it out! |
