My name is Erica Unroe! I am a senior music education major at James Madison University. I am originally from a small town in Alleghany County, Virginia, but my current home is in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I love to spend time with my wonderful friends and family, draw, craft, and dance, but my heart will always be full when I get to form relationships and make music with others.
Narrative
As an educator, my goal is to show students that I care about them, their ideas, and their learning at all times in my classroom. All of my actions in my classroom are based off of 4 principles: creativity, encouragement, responsibility, and love. Students in elementary school have valuable questions and growing minds, and it is an incredible opportunity to be able to teach them at that age. In addition to this, I feel that music is ever-evolving. Therefore, I believe that curriculum in the classroom should evolve with the students instead of staying stagnant as the world around it advances. While still keeping in touch with our standards of learning, there are so many ways to make a music classroom engaging, moving, inclusive, and exciting for students, Allowing students space in this to be creative problem solvers will help them feel valuable and appreciated. This comes with a level of encouragement and love not only from the teacher, but from their friends in class. Encouraging students to respect one another in my classroom, and to take responsibility for their actions is a goal in all of my future classes. It is so important to base all that we do off of love, and that's exactly what I plan to do for my students!
