College, as a whole, has taught me about many things. Aside from helping me grow as a musician, and a future educator, it has taught me an immense amount of self-control and time management. In my previous years as a scholar, before college, I was very much focused on grades, and what I had to do to receive good ones. In college, however, that mindset has turned into one more focused on learning and retaining information rather than just memorizing it for a grade. If I am learning for the sake of learning, the grades actually follow!
For example, in our Music Technology class, my partner Davina and I purposefully went above and beyond with our final project. We weren’t just striving for a good grade, we were working toward a full understanding of what our professor intended. That mindset benefitted us greatly, as that project has led us toward more opportunities. For example, we are actually presenting at 3 total conferences (JMU TLT Conference, VMEA, and Illinois Music Education Conference) this year in various locations. (http://ericaunroe.weebly.com/scholarship/final-project and http://ericaunroe.weebly.com/scholarship/semester-reflection ) I hope to grow within this mindset by the time I start student teaching. If I keep that goal in mind for the next three years, I will be able to retain the knowledge needed to instruct and guide a K-12 class. That will be where I reach my goal as a scholar for the time being. I will always be growing as a scholar, but this aspect is one that I am currently focusing on. |
